The Key

In the past ten minutes, Kain has looked at his watch too many times to keep count. Sitting in front of a college computer in one of his most boring lessons, he was waiting for a certain two wonderful words, but despite his impatience, he knew he wouldn’t get them for another 15 minutes! Kain himself is a rather handsome 18 year old IT student. He stands almost 7 feet tall with black messy hair and a goatee on his chin.

"Dude I’m so bored!"

Kain jumped at his friend’s voice, it was just Mike, and so he smiled and said

"Yeah, so I’ve heard a million times, but man I need to get out of here. I just want to see Beck again"

Beck was Kain's love, Soul mate he’d even go so far as to say, and with the love he felt for her you would be a fool to deny that, she was the most beautiful thing on this earth as far as Kain was concerned. She might not be the big breasted, tight assed model material kids these days where calling hot, but she had a cute face, and to Kain, that topped everything, everything but her loving personality.

Eventually he got those words "Class Dismissed" and Kain rushed out to find Beck standing in front of the classroom door, sadly his feet were too slow to react and he tumbled into her. But upon hitting the ground the young couple just giggled and kissed as the rest of Kain's class stepped over them, Lecturer included. As they stood up they found Miss Vella, The College’s English teacher, standing in front of them, she was actually surprised and exclaimed "When did you two hook up?!"

Miss Karen Vella was more than just a teacher to Kain, they where good friends. Kain just smiled as Beck told Karen she had to be blind not to see the way they looked at each other, they’ve been together for over a year, but only recently were so open about it.

With all classes over, it was time to get home and after getting a snack together, Kain walked Beck home, and after a kiss goodbye started on his own journey home.

Lightning strikes the ground, hitting hard from a cloudless sky, shattering all it hits. The sun burns with an intense heat, its odd colour remains unnoticed as looking at it blinds instantly. Inside an old looking primary school, Beck was surrounded by panicking children and teachers. She was feeling at the wall, somehow knowing the key to ending this all was close. With the sound of a click Beck knew she found the right brick, as the floor underneath her feet descended into darkness. She felt around for a light switch but found instead a medieval style torch, she quickly felt inside her pockets, extracted a box of matches and lit up the torch. As dim light filled her surroundings she noticed a small alter with some strange inscriptions on it. And despite her never seeing the symbols before she read them with ease

"As the clear sky sends raw evil power to the earth annihilating all, the sun shall send rays of deathly heat, the world will end! But one hope remains, the blood of the key shall bring normality to earth and save it, she is young and has proven herself worthy of his love."

And without a doubt Beck knew she was this key, she pulled out a pocket knife, conveniently also in her pocket and slit her finger and as soon as her blood made contact with the alter the screaming above calmed down.

Beck awoke in bed and quickly looked at her finger, no blood; no cut, it was just a dream. But it was so vivid, she was sure it had to mean something. She made a mental note to tell her loved one, he had often claimed dreams can be premonitions of the future, so he should understand, and might even be able to help her.

With the dream in mind she called Kain and asked him if he could meet her for a drink, it was Saturday and they had no college.

Kain, ever the love struck one, said yes without a moment’s hesitation.

Beck sat at the bar cursing Kain for being late, she was too nervous to wait, but in reality she knew it wasn’t Kain’s fault, she was actually just early.

Eventually Kain did arrive and she just rushed over to him and cuddled up.

"Hey glad to see you too" Kain said as he kissed her, "so what’s going on?"

For what appeared to be no reason at all Beck burst into tears as she described every detail of her dream. Kain was confused to see Beck staring at him the way she was.

"What? What is it?"

"You’ve gone very pale"

"In your dream you have just described in perfect detail my old primary school!"

After a long discussion over many drinks, the young couple decided to go investigate, and visit the school on Monday.

On Sunday night, Beck got little sleep, she dreamt the exact same dream again, but this time she sensed a force of pure evil in the dark room with the alter, watching her every move.

As they approached the front door to the school Beck started to hesitate.

"Is something wrong?" Kain asked her with genuine concern.

"Tha-that is the exact same building from my dream" Beck had some obvious fear in her voice.

Kain was less surprised by this news then he thought he should have been, this disturbed him, but he just hugged Beck tightly and reassured her, but she could sense the discomfort coming from him and said nothing.

Inside the school a few nuns where sitting in the staff room of the obviously Catholic primary school. They where startled at the sound of the doorbell, no one was expecting visitors at this time, especially not during school hours.

Kain was about to ring the doorbell again when an old looking nun opened the door.

"How may I help you?" she asked

"I was once a student here and I wanted to see how the school is doing, if you don’t mind... I suppose I’ve been feeling rather nostalgic in the past few days" After thinking this through the nun smiled and let the young couple in, she had a soft spot for young love.

Suddenly Beck started to feel sick and asked to use the schools facilities but didn’t wait for an answer, she ran up a staircase nearby seeming to know exactly where she was going. This worried Kain but he hid it form the nun

"I apologize, she isn’t feeling well, but she is only here to accompany me, can you show me around?"

As the nun was about to say yes she heard thunder

"That’s odd, I don’t remember seeing a single cloud in the sky earlier today, are you ok? You look like you’ve seen a ghost?"

Kain was indeed extremely white, and he obviously very agitated, but before he could say anything he heard children screaming. He turned around to find them rushing out of a class room which appeared to be on fire, and upon entering he noticed the ceiling had a big hole, it looked like lightning struck.

Beck was standing over the toilet waiting to hurl; she felt so sick, she couldn’t understand why. Looking at her reflection in the toilet water she starts to feel even worse, but couldn’t look away.

In the water red eyes seemed to take form and Beck could sense a sadistic smile coming from them, but before she could scream she was startled by a loud crack and children screaming

Kain darted off to the bathrooms to find his loved one, he knocked on the bathroom door for about ten seconds before kicking the door down. He smelled Beck’s perfume coming from one of the toilets and opened the door to find nothing there. In blind panic he rushed down the stairs hearing constant thunder and very loud cracks. As he got to the bottom of the stairs he saw utter chaos as the nuns, teachers and children alike were running around in utter panic trying to get out. Kain screamed his loved ones name, tears running down his cheeks, he couldn’t even hear himself over the children’s screams, but he screamed desperately none the less.

He searched every room continuously screaming Beck’s name. Everyone had already run away, so it was just Kain in the empty primary school. When his own panic died down and he realized the hopelessness of the situation he lost all feeling in his legs. He fell over landing hard on his ass, and started crying pathetically over his inability to find his loved one.

Darkness, pitch black darkness... Beck was lying next to what felt like the alter in her dream, writhing in pain;

It hurts, oh god it hurts! Please god, have some mercy and fucking kill me already! I don’t deserve this. I can’t take this any more, Forgive me Kain, I love you, but I am too weak to handle the suffering... I must end it.

A dark shallow voice filled her head:

"Yes, end it. Take the easy way out, the world will end and you can do nothing about it, end your life bitch!"

Beck stood up with much effort and grabbed what felt like some sort of sacrificial dagger, and took a deep breath as she prepared to drive it through her own heart.

The time for depression was short, next came the rage. With a sharp scream Kain rushed over to the closest wall and battered it with his fist. Too enraged to feel the pain he continued to punch the wall even after splattering blood all over it.

After loosing track of time and finally wearing himself out Kain fell over and weakly looked up, staring at his blood trickling down the wall. He observed how the blood covered a huge part of the wall, but seemed to deviate from a small rectangular area. Rejuvenated with new hope Kain quickly got up and laid his hand on the dry part of the wall and pushed it in. The floor underneath Kain jolted and he lost his footing and fell over, noticing the floor is actually some sort of elevator descending into the unknown.

Beck burst into tears as she lifted the dagger at about her heads height. She took one final breath convinced this would really be her last, and brought down the dagger before noting some light flicker off the dagger. She passed out.

She woke up in a puddle of blood, but felt no pain other than a rather bad headache. Two thoughts ran trough her head:
Am I dead?
And
I wasn’t strong enough Kain, forgive me.

She stood up and her head started to hurt even more; She decided she can’t be dead. The pain caused her to stagger and kick some small object on the floor. She bent down to find it and felt a body in front of her. As she felt the body her heart skipped a beat. She knew without a doubt that it was Kain. She quickly felt about for the object she had kicked and found it, it was Kain’s phone. She pressed a button and activated the light on it to illuminate the body. She instantly realized the blood pool was not hers, but that of her lover.

The elevator stopped and Kain stepped off. He couldn’t see a thing, so he pulled out his phone and used the light to see what he could. The first thing he saw upon lighting up was Beck with a dagger aimed at her own chest. Without sparing a second to think Kain pounced at her. He attempted to shield her heart with his right arm and managed, but had to pay for it with a dagger in his own arm. They came down hard and Beck hit her head on the alter passing out. Kain was up a little longer, but soon passed out after losing a lot of blood

It was a Monday evening; Mike was sitting at his computer in the dark playing the successful Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game; World of Warcraft. On most evenings he’d spend hours playing, getting off at about two in the morning. Today wouldn’t have been any different if it wasn’t for the phone call that would involve him the most important quest of his life, infinitely more exciting and dangerous then an online game could ever be.

At around 9:45, while doing battle with the Leader of some orcish clan, Mikes mobile phone rang, he looked at the phone and saw it was just Kain, couldn’t have been important he figured and went back to the game, only to find his character dead and the orcish leader laughing at him. He quickly grabbed the phone and answered it ready to scream at Kain for distracting him, but bit his tongue when he heard Beck sobbing on the other end.

"Oh God! Mike, please, Kain is bleeding, he’s been stabbed, he’s not breathing!"
Mike didn’t know where to begin, he could barely understand Beck in the first place, and to make things worse he was too stunned by the desperation in her voice to actually say anything.

"Damn it Mike, say something, he’s going to die!"
As if the word ‘die’ triggered something in his head, Mike finally came back to his senses.

"Calm down Beck, Where are you? I’ll call an ambulance and be right there. What happened?" Mike asked calmly with only mild alarm in his voice.

"It’s a long story and there is no time, I don’t even know what happened anyway. But he’s bleeding and not breathing, he has a dagger in his right arm.
Oh! And we are at the primary school in Ghasri, I’ll get him outside"

With that Mike called an ambulance and made his own way there.

After telling Mike she’ll take Kain outside, Beck realized something she forgot to consider: Kain’s weight! Although in the end and with great effort she did drag him over to the elevator, with more than a little contribution from her panic induced adrenaline rush.

Leaving the dagger in Kain’s arm she ripped off his shirt and tied it round his arm to slow down the blood flow to his arm and stop or at least slow down the bleeding. As she stared at her normally very proud man, lying on her lap looking so helpless and weak, she couldn’t help but cuddle up with him as warm tears ran down her cheeks.

After what seemed like an eternity in the tiny glow provided by Kain’s phone, the elevator finally came to a stop. Beck kissed Kain’s seemingly lifeless Lips and prepared to drag him outside. As she made to grab Kain from behind to drag him somebody’s arms wrapped around her face holding a cloth over her nose, she inhaled deeply with surprise and passed out

Outside a ruined school, surrounded by black burn marks, Mike stepped out of his car. He looked around with horrified awe at the broken down building that just yesterday was a perfectly normal primary school. Mike walked to the schools front gate to look for Beck and help her drag out Kain. He set his hand on the gate and it fell backwards.

The school looked pretty bad from the outside, but the inside was even worse; Bricks from the ceiling where all over the floor, which was also covered in burn marks, classrooms where full of burning desks, as well as a few snapped by falling ceiling fragments.

"What the hell happened here?" Mike asked himself as he walked around looking for Beck, and occasionally screaming her name

A middle-aged man sat down on wooden chair in a dark room observing two unconscious teenagers... or were they too old to be called teenagers? He didn’t know, nor should it matter, all that did matter was that lying in front of him, illuminated by the only light in the room coming out of a tiny hole high up on the wall, was the only person who could keep the world from ending and that persons lover.

The girl woke up slowly expecting her head to burst into the mother of all headaches, but as she got up she actually felt pretty good. She looked around and saw nothing but darkness, only seeing herself and her man in what felt like a spotlight. She inspected her man, he was ok, all the blood cleaned up and his wounded arm well bandaged. She was about to get up but was startled to hear another persons voice

"It is alright, you are among friends now"

The woman sat in her office playing with a pencil. She had been waiting patiently for news on their young guests for too long, and her patience was running out. the office was a simple little room with very little furniture, just the desk, a chair behind the desk and one in front for visitors, there wasn’t even a window.

"It’s true! The prophecy is true!" came a loud voice behind the door, which was soon slammed open, the pretty assistant too excited to bother knocking stood in the open doorway trying very hard to keep her voice at a controlled tone.

The woman behind the desk smiled, and stood up.
"You sure it’s them? I don’t want another false alarm; if we are found out it will be the end of us, and everything."

The assistant sat down, and took a deep breath to calm herself down, then said "Helen, I’ve never been so sure, we are interviewing them now, she said she is having the dreams! And he... he has the mark"

The woman, Helen walked to her assistant and grabbed her shoulder.
"Are you sure? The mark isn’t supposed to appear yet... it’s too early... oh God we’re running out of time!"

"I’ve described my dreams to you, now will you tell me what the hell is going on here?!" exclaimed Beck not trying very hard to hide her anger. She was in a small room sitting on a rather uncomfortable chair at a pretty old table talking to a man in robes.

"You are not yet ready, but we fear there might not be enough time. Your destiny is at hand." Spoke the robed man.

Obviously not content with that answer Beck asked
"What the hell are you even on about?!"

"Speak to Helen, our leader and prophet; she will know what to tell you. I have gathered all information I need here; you may go and seek her now."

Without saying anything Beck got up and left.

Kain was sitting in some sort of infirmary, with his shirt off. There was no doctor around just another robed man, the man had been examining Kain’s hands.
"Dude, I told you, my hand got stabbed, its not friggin stigmata already!"

The man was convinced that Kain had ‘the mark’ which was bleeding from his hands in the same way Jesus had when crucified, Stigmata. Kain refused to believe this, but deep down inside he couldn’t really deny it. Both his hands where bleeding, not just the one he used to protect Beck, and the blade had made contact with his arm, not the palm of his hand.

"Look damnit I want to get out of here, you guys kidnap me and my... Where the hell is Beck anyway?"

But before the robed man could answer there came a knock on the door, it was Helens assistant.
